KARACHI: A local NGO filed a constitutional petition in the Sindh High Court against the spiralling prices of general commodities due to the increase in petroleum prices.

On Wednesday, a division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Salman Hamid, heard the petition by Intikhab Alam Suri, the honorary secretary of the NGO, Human Rights Network. The petitioner maintains that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has approved the extraordinary increase in fuel prices, which in turn has resulted in the price hike of all essential commodities.

He submitted that the price hike has put edibles such as meat, vegetables, ghee and pulses out of the reach of the common man — a fact reflected in market reports which show a considerable decline in the daily purchase of items. He prayed the court to direct Ogra to decrease the petroleum prices to give relief to the public. After hearing the petitioner’s counsel, the bench issued notices to Ogra and the federal and provincial government for December 22.

PSM case

Another SHC bench, comprising Justice Athar Saeed and Justice Munib Akhtar, granted bail to Capt (retd) Rasheed Abro of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) in three different cases of corruption. He is the co-accused with former PSM chairman Moeen Aftab. The applicant was ordered to submit a solvent surety of Rs1 million for each case.
