KARACHI: The alumni of Karachi University are hosting an exhibition Bay Rung that was launched on Tuesday, December 7, at the Canvas Gallery and will remain open till December 16 from 10:30 am to 8 pm.

The participating artists are Raheela Abro, Madiha Bano, Nosheen Iqbal, Sahar Jawaid, Sheema Khan, Sophia Mairaj, Fariha Nadir, Syed Muhammad Raza and Fizza Zaidi.

“The idea of Bay Rung evolved from the thought of working in black and white, but later on it developed into making the concept bay rung so that the artists could have the freedom to work in colour,” said a press release.

The title ‘Bay Rung’ is meant to make a statement. “We are using this title to reflect the present social and political scenario of our country,” said the artists, “how the extreme instability has led our lives into the realm of uncertainty and confusion.”

Each artist had an individual concept, style and preferred medium. Syed Muhammad used acrylics and prints to create his Rang-e-Siyar series, depicting a man holding a bloodied knife. Raheela Abro commented in a rather literal fashion on how people are being duped in Pakistan by those in power. She painted owls on chess pieces as a play on the Urdu phrase “Ulloo banana” and how people are just “pawns” in the great game.

Sahar Jawaid said her work revolves around showing the absence of all human expressions with monochromatic oil on canvas. Madiha Bano said she was inspired by the “phenomenon of ‘spread’” rendered with ink on glass to create sketches. Fariha Nadir used a 5,000-rupee note from which the Quaid’s face has been removed in stages to “simply suggest how our nation has forgotten his values and sacrifices”.
