NA-246 by-polls: Surveillance cameras to be installed inside polling stations, says ECP

Asks KE not to have load-shedding on the polling day

Election authorities have decided to allow the installation of surveillance cameras inside and outside the polling stations in NA-246 constituency of Karachi where by-elections are scheduled to be held on April 23.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in a statement said on Monday that surveillance cameras could be installed; however the devices should not compromise the secrecy of the vote.

The ECP has also barred voters from carrying mobile phones inside the polling stations.

Moreover, to ensure smooth counting of votes, the Election Commission has also asked K-Electric for no load shedding on the polling day, especially during the time of the counting of the result.

Further, the presiding officers (POs) have been directed to reach their designated polling stations a day before the elections, while district administration has been asked to provide logistic and administrative support to the polling staff.

Earlier, the election body had turned down the request of Sindh Rangers to install biometric system in the constituency.

Secretary ECP Babar Yaqoob said the commission did not have enough time to implement biometric systems in the constituency and that the move would require many legal and procedural changes.
