Constable Fazal Malik, who was on duty at a checkpoint in F-11 Markaz, stopped a luxury vehicle but the occupants, belonging to an influential family involved in the liquor business in the city, beat up Malik and fled. The police recovered three crates of liquor from the car which was left behind.
The constable suffered multiple injuries, including a fracture to his left hand, and was shifted to a hospital.
Later, two men came to take the car and were arrested. However, both were released from Shalimar Police Station within a few hours after a call from “an influential person”.
The interior minister took notice of the incident and suspended Shalimar SHO Sajjad Bukhari late Saturday night. Moreover, Superintendent of Police Syed Bilal and DSP Ashraf Shah, were removed from their posts and issued show-cause notices.
The minister, while issuing the orders, remarked that officials who fail to protect their colleagues have no right to perform their duty.
