Discouraging violence: ‘Sufism needed to promote peace’

Students picked from six colleges to spread message of peace.

LAHORE: Our youth should follow the teachings of sufis to promote peace in society, Punjab Assembly Parliamentary Committee on Youth Affairs member Bushra Anjum Butt said on Wednesday.

She was addressing the launching ceremony of a project to promote peace and tolerance in society with the help of youth. The project has been organised by the Centre for Health and Gender Equality (CHANGE) in collaboration with Umeed Jawan.

“It is unfortunate that many Pakistanis are now migrating to other countries in pursuit of a peaceful environment. The government is taking all steps to establish peace and develop the country. This is not possible without participation of the youth,” she said.

Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO) regional head Salman Abid, poet Abbas Tabish, Pir Syed Nazim Hussain, Muhammad Pervaiz and Mumtaz Husain addressed the ceremony.

Abid said that it was the responsibility of the civil society to engage the youth in their programmes. “Youth should play a positive role in society. It is very important that they have a clear direction in life. It is the responsibility of state to encourage and guide the youth,” he said.

Under the programme, students from six government colleges of Lahore have been selected to promote peace in society.
