LAHORE:

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) acquitted a man accused of fanning sectarian hatred.

Sheikhupura police had stated that they received information on January 16 that Qari Ilyas, a member of Sipah-i-Sahaba, was inciting a crowd against Ahmadis and Shias.

“Ilyas used derogatory language against Ahmadis and Shias. He urged the people to donate funds for carrying out criminal activities against the sects,” police said.

Ghulam Mustafa Chaudhry, Ilyas’s lawyer, argued that he was innocent and had been implicated in a false case. He said that Ilyas had no links with any banned outfit.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Ilyas said that he had not incited anyone. “I was arrested at midnight from my house. They registered the FIR two days later,” he said.
