KARACHI:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) remanded on Tuesday an alleged target killer affiliated with a banned sectarian militant group to police custody on physical remand.

The suspect, Bilal Qureshi alias Chingari, was arrested after an encounter with the police in New Karachi on Monday. According to the investigation officer, Qureshi was a former unit in-charge of the defunct Sipah-e-Sahaba and was involved in killing Shia doctors in the city.

However, the case in which he was remanded included sections on attempted murder, assault of public servants, and possession of illicit weapons and explosives. “As soon as his involvement in the murder cases is certain, he will be implicated in them,” he said.

The ATC-II link judge, Anand Ram Sairani, sent the suspect to police custody for two weeks. Earlier, the police claimed that the suspect was involved in at least 26 sectarian attacks.
