GILGIT:

Gilgit police have arrested two policemen accused of murdering their colleagues in the suburbs of the city.

Hussain Iqbal and Manzoom Hussain were shot dead near Sakwar area on Thursday over a personal enmity. Hussain Iqbal was in the elite force while Manzoom Hussain was serving in the special branch and was posted at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. They were returning home when they were ambushed.

Constable Iftikhar Hussain and Mushtaq Hussain were arrested late Friday after relatives of the deceased nominated them in the FIR, an official said on Saturday.

According to Mubarak Jan, a spokesperson at the Central Police Office, the incident triggered a wave of anger in the police department, with IGP Zafar Iqbal Awan suspending the SHO of Jutial area, Abdul Hadi, over negligence and misconduct.

“The police chief was perturbed over the killing of the policemen,” Jan told The Express Tribune. “The SHO and two accused have been suspended.” Jan added the IGP has also nominated SP Tanveerul Hassan as the enquiry officer to investigate the case and submit a report within a week.
