LAHORE: Wikileaks is part of a dangerous game to break the country, the newly-appointed Punjab president of the Pakistan Peoples Party Imtiaz Safdar Warraich said on Friday.

He was addressing a press conference organised at the Governor’s House to introduce him to the public. Governor Salmaan Taseer and senior PPP leaders including Senior Minister Raja Riaz were also present. Governor Taseer said that people needed to understand that the leaked documents were not coming from an official source. He said that the information provided in the WikiLeaks carried no more weight than drawing room gossip. Earlier, Warraich said his goal was to prepare the party workers for the up-coming local elections and eventually form government in the province after the 2013 general elections. He said that PPP had a large enough vote bank in the province, it only needed to organise its workers.

Warraich said that the party would always give importance to the role of youth in politics, adding that they would play the most important role in the next general elections.

He lamented that there was still a ban on student unions on university campuses but said the youth now had a right to vote and they should exercise this right to play their role in the country’s politics.

The new PPP president criticised the provincial government for poor administration. He said, “Whoever is in power should be held accountable.”

He said that the government was using task forces for jobs for which there had always been regular departments.

To a question about allegations of aerial firing by PPP workers during a rally he led in Gujranwala, Warraich said that there were fireworks but no shooting.
