Public health: ‘Most Punjab cities will have potable water by 2017’

Filtration plants will be established in four cities in the first phase of the project, says the chief minister.

Most cities in the province would be covered under a potable water project by 2017, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Saturday.


He was presiding over a meeting convened to review progress on development projects.

Sharif said that in the first phase of the project more than 300 water filtration plants were being installed in four cities. He said the project had been started to address the need for clean drinking water.

The chief minister said new roads connecting villages to marketplaces were being constructed across the province under the Khadim-i-Punjab Green Roads Programme. He said that the project would expand economic opportunities for people in the rural areas.

Sharif said the Metro Bus service in Lahore was catering to more than 150,000 people daily. He said the government was committed to improving the public transport infrastructure across the province. He said metro bus projects would soon be started for in other cities as well.  A Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus project was nearing completion, he added.

Provincial Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmad, Members of National and Provincial Assembly Pervaiz Malik, Hamza Shahbaz, Daniyal Aziz, Sardar Ashiq Hussain Gopang, Sajid Mehdi, Rana Sanaullah, Mansha Ullah Butt, Saud Majeed, former MPA Sami Ullah were also present at the occasion.

‘Ensure vegetable oil is sold on reduced prices’ 

Sharif presided over another meeting to review steps being taken to ensure availability of vegetable oil and ghee on reduced prices.

Provincial Minister for Food Bilal Yasin, Provincial Assembly Member Rana Sanaullah, the chief secretary, the Inspector General of Police, Secretaries of Industry, Agriculture, Livestock and Food Departments, Lahore division commissioner and district coordination officer Lahore were also present.

The officials concerned were directed to ensure that the commodity was being sold in the province at the newly notified prices. The chief minister said strict action would be taken against businesses found overcharging customers.
