Gaining edge: FPCCI official urges early mango export
Mango exports dropped 40% as compared to previous years due to non-compliance with DG SANCO requirements timely
Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FPCCI) Standing Committee on Horticulture and Agri produce Chairman Ahmad Jawad has said that the government department, DPP, must start preparation for mango exports to EU. While talking to the UNIDO TRTA II programme, Chief Technical Adviser Bruno Valanzuolo, Jawad said this year the situation will be more competitive, as EU allowed exports of Indian mango after visiting their facilities. Last year, Pakistani mango exports dropped 40% as compared to previous years due to non-compliance with DG SANCO requirements timely. The fruit, however, was two to three times more pricy in 2014 as compared to the previous year, mainly due to no competition from India. The drop in the export reflected how the government was desperately trying to avoid a possible all-out ban by putting in place strict measures to ensure export of pest-free fruits.
