PESHAWAR:

Twelve prisoners on death row in Peshawar Central Jail are to be hanged after the completion of legal formalities, sources said on Tuesday.

Jails in K-P have received a notification regarding the interior ministry’s removal of the moratorium on the death penalty. Police officials said IG Prisons received the notification, adding jail superintendents were also informed of the latest developments.

Sources privy to the development confirmed the prisoners would be executed after officials obtain death warrants from the courts.

Prison authorities would submit applications for these warrants and the consequent executions would be held on specified dates. As many as 100 death row inmates whose pleas for mercy have been rejected will be executed across the province.

However, the K-P home department spokesperson denied having any information on such a notification.
