KARACHI:

Hundreds of students from the Karachi University (KU) took to the streets on Monday against the alleged increase, by up to 200 per cent, in their tuition and examination fees.

Boycotting academic activities, protesting students marched to University Road, where their sit-in caused traffic chaos. The students shouted slogans demanding that the vice-chancellor (VC) withdraw the increase in fees.

"The university had decided to moderately increase the fees for new entrants," contradicted VC Prof Dr Muhammad Qaiser. "The varsity's fee structure has not been modified for the last five years."

The students later ended the protest after Dr Qaiser issued a notification confirming that the increase in the examination fees for new entrants will amount to 50 per cent.
