LAHORE:

Dozens of people held a demonstration in Sherakot on Sunday to protest against a death in police custody. The protesters blocked Bund Road for traffic for several hours.

Zubair, 25, had been taken into custody by Harbanspura police on suspicion of theft. On Saturday night, he was found unconscious in front of his house. The family took him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The family and neighbours of the deceased gathered in front of the Babu Sabu Interchange early in the morning and burned tyres.

The family said that there were clear torture marks on Zubair’s body.

The protest was called off four hours later after some police officials visited the protesters.

Later, the body was sent to a mortuary and a complaint registered against three policemen.

Harbanspura police said they had arrested Rasheeda, Zubair’s mother, after valuables worth Rs300,000 went missing from a house where she had worked. Later, they also arrested Zubair. They said Zubair was detained for questioning, but later released. They said that Zubair had died in a road accident.

Operations DIG Dr Haider Ashraf said that an FIR had been registered against ASI Siraj Ahmad and two other policemen.
