KARACHI: A man allegedly killed his ex-wife in a fruit and vegetable market in Orangi Town on Thursday.

Residents helped the police arrest the accused, who confessed he killed his ex-wife because they were both fighting for the custody of their seven-month-old baby.

Twenty-three-year-old Sidra Kiran was divorced by her husband, Ali Hassan, four months ago. She was buying vegetables in the market near the Ali Imambargah within the jurisdiction of the Pirabad police station when Hassan allegedly opened fire at her. Witnesses said Hassan approached Sidra from behind and without a single word, shot her in the head. People in the market took Sidra to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body was handed over to her family.

Meanwhile, residents caught the ex-husband and beat him up before handing him over to the police.

Police officials said that Sidra had fallen in love with Hassan, who lived in her neighbourhood and ran a grocery shop in the area. She decided to marry him a year and a half ago. Sidra’s relatives said that the couple was living happily at first but later constant quarrels and domestic disputes led Hassan to divorce Sidra.

“We thought that was the end of their quarrels but then they started fighting over the custody of their baby,” a relative said.

While Hassan had custody of the child, Sidra had decided to go to court and try and get custody. But when her ex-husband found out, he started to threaten her.

SHO Rana Nasarullah said the custody dispute was the reason Hassan murdered his ex-wife. The officer said that the police also seized the murder weapon, a 9mm pistol, from Hassan and had registered a case against him.
