ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan made it clear on Friday that his party would neither vote for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidates nor Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidates for the post of Senate chairman.

“Both these parties have damaged democracy in the country,” said Imran, while addressing the press in Islamabad on Friday.

He added that both the parties were involved in politics for the sake of making money, and that his candidates from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) did not allow the sale of their conscience and democracy, and stood beside the party.

“...this is the change which I pledged with my people," he said.

The announcement, however, irked senior party leaders who said any such decision will be taken following deliberations and consensus in PTI's Core Committee.

In the presence of party leaders, K-P Chief Minister Pervez Khattak told The Express Tribune that the announcement is Imran’s personal opinion who will accept the Committee’s decision as a democratic leader.

Campaign for direct elections in Senate

The PTI chairman also announced to initiate a campaign in the country in support of direct elections for the Upper House of Parliament.

“A similar situation was created in the US in 1913 and they decided that Senators would be elected through direct polling,” the PTI chief pointed out.

A committee of legal experts has already been formed to overlook this matter, he added.

Federal and provincial lawmakers voted to elect over four dozen members of the upper house of Parliament on Thursday. The incoming senators are to replace 52 lawmakers who are retiring on March 11 after completing their six-year constitutional term.
