On Anver Majid’s complaint: SHC issues notices to Zulfiqar Mirza, TV channels, PEMRA

Plaintiff claims Mirza damaged his reputation by making ‘baseless’ allegations

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Thursday refrained former Sindh home minister Zulfiqar Mirza from leveling ‘false and baseless’ allegations against Anver Majid, especially in interviews with TV channels, without backing up his claims with proof.

The directions came in response to an application filed by Majid against Mirza, Geo TV, Dunya News, ARY Communications, Dawn News, News One and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority.

In the application, Majid’s counsel said the aforementioned TV channels had aired interviews of Mirza in which the ex-home minister had leveled false and baseless allegations, and used derogatory and defamatory language against his client. He said the interviews were presenting information “based on wrong facts, assumptions, surmises and conjectures,” which were causing serious damage to his client’s character and reputation.

Majid’s lawyer claimed his client was being threatened that a campaign would be initiated against him in the near future.

The court, in its order, also directed the TV channels mentioned as respondents to refrain from airing any programme which contains the use of derogatory and defamatory language against the plaintiff and which presents any claims without the verification of facts. It issued notices to the respondents to appear before the court on March 5.

sehr.siddiqui | 9 years ago | Reply @Waqar: While some of us may like to look other way, the fact is that Anwar Majid is the front man of Asif Zardari and looks after the Sugar Mills and the Banking matters. Rescheduling of Sugar mills at NBP are clear proof of influence used by this man. The loan of Rs. 84 crores was settled for Rs.7 crores only. As a reward Ashraf Wathra was brought from NBP to State Bank as Deputy Governor. He was in the government notification given the banking portfolio whereas Government never allocates the portfolio. SBP Governor Yasin had objected to this irregularity and he was given a shut up call in SBP Board which is appointed by the Government. This was done by PPP and this government of PML(N) appointed Vathra as Governor SBP. Here the two parties are hands in glove with each other. These facts can be verified through Board minutes of NBP and the SBP. I know my comments may not be published by ET for fear.

Waqar | 9 years ago | Reply Sindh High Court has just quashed our fundamental right of freedom of speech. So from now on nobody can even say a thing about all these looters. The judges want us to watch silently as Asif Zardari and his stooge Anver Majid conduct day light robbery. Judiciary has become an enabling factor for all these criminals. The freedom of speech is our in alienable right, no court has the authority to strike down on that. Zulfiqar Mirza was not making statements against the honor of Pakistan or Islam but was talking about the criminal conglomerate that Asif Zardari and Faryal Talpur run through people such as Anver Majid and AG Majid. Any journalist of Karachi will substantiate that Anver Majid and AG Majid along with family have for the last 7 years received police mobiles for their protection. His claims that he is a businessman are absolutely false. The whole world knows that AG Majid is always with Asif Zardari at Bilawal House. They own most sugar mills in Sindh and through outright heavy handedness have intimidated other sugar mills to not indulge in any competition for sugar cane supplies. Praying that this whole corrupt nexus is dismantled. I wish media had the guts to do an investigative report on Anver Majid and family.
