MULTAN: Geological work for a 120-megawatt hydroelectric power project at Taunsa Barrage, Muzaffargarh has begun. In February 2014, the Punjab Power Development Board tasked Nespak, Kabani & Co and Mandviwala & Zafar Associates to study the project, prepare its design and conduct a geological survey. After the soil analysis, a model study of the project would be carried out at Nandipur. The project would then enter tender stage for the installation of turbines. The hydel power project would have five turbines; each having a capacity of 24MW, along with a special 500 feet wide and 18 feet deep channel 3,000 feet above the main barrage. The water, after passing through this channel, would fall on the turbines to move the fans and would then join the main Indus River. The overall cost of the project is assessed at Rs70 billion.
