The Sindh High Court (SHC) has called comments from the home secretary, provincial prisons chief and others on a petition seeking the suspension of two death convicts’ execution reportedly pardoned by the victims. The convicts, Muhammad Faisal and Muhammad Afzal, will be hanged at Karachi Central Jail on March 5.
An anti-terrorism court had in 1999 given death sentences to the two for killing a man during a robbery in Korangi in 1998. Their relatives moved, however, the high court on Friday against the black warrants issued for their execution, claiming that, “both the convicts have been pardoned by the legal heirs of the deceased.”
They argued that since the victim’s family had pardoned the convicts they cannot be executed. A division bench headed by Justice Ahmed Ali M Shiekh issued notices to the respondents and the provincial law officer to file comments.
