KARACHI:

The body of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat's (ASWJ) district Korangi president, Maulana Shabbir Hyderi, was sent to his hometown, Mansehra, for the burial on Wednesday. So far, the police have been unable to trace the culprits behind his murder.

Maulana Hyderi, 45, and his friend Khan Din, 35, were on a motorcycle when unidentified men in a car shot at them within the limits of the Awami Colony police station on Tuesday evening. Hyderi died on the spot while Khan Din was taken to Jinnah hospital for treatment, where he was reportedly stable. No case has yet been registered.

An ASWJ spokesperson said the attack on Hyderi was one of many on party leaders, workers and activists. He demanded that the culprits should be arrested without further delay.

"We heard that Maulana Hyderi was receiving threats from someone to leave the neighbourhood," DSP Ali Muhammad Khosa told The Express Tribune. "We have to verify it." The officer said that the police was waiting to record the statement of the injured and a case will be registered. Awami Colony SHO Ahmed Butt was suspended following the incident.
