WASHINGTON DC: US President Barack Obama on Thursday urged countries to tackle violent Islamist militancy around the world and rejected as "an ugly lie" suggestions that the West was at war with Islam and embroiled in a clash of civilizations.

Obama said there was a complicated history between the Middle East and the West and no one should be immune from criticism over specific policies.

"But the notion that the West is at war with Islam is an ugly lie," he said. "And all of us, regardless of our faith, have a responsibility to reject it," he told a conference convened by the White House on countering violent extremism.

"Muslim communities, including scholars and clerics, therefore have a responsibility to push back not just on twisted interpretations of Islam, but also on the lie that we are somehow engaged in a clash of civilizations," Obama said.

With violent groups like Islamic State, Boko Haram and al-Shabaab gaining strength in Africa and the Middle East, more than 60 countries and international organizations have gathered in Washington to come up with a plan for tackling the problem.

Obama announced that the United States would join the United Arab Emirates to create a new digital communications hub to work with religious and community leaders to counter "terrorist propaganda," and urged others to join the effort.

Political critics have accused the White House of shying away from tying extremism to the religion of Islam after the recent attacks staged by Islamist militants in Paris and Copenhagen.

Addressing the conference, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he would convene a meeting in coming months of faith leaders from around the world and warned that violent extremism posed a grave threat to international peace and security.

"Military operations are crucial to confront real threats. But bullets are not the 'silver bullet,'" Ban said. "Missiles may kill terrorists. But good governance kills terrorism."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said countries needed to promote tolerance and peace, while addressing social and economic inequality that militants use to recruit.

"You have to do everything. You have to take the people off the battlefield, who are there today," Kerry said. "But you’re kind of stupid if all you do is do that, and you don’t prevent more people from going to the battlefield," he added.

Nick Rasmussen, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, a U.S. spy agency, said the threat of militants was constantly changing and the United States and its allies faced "more frequent low level attacks against all of us."

Islamic State has demonstrated an "agile and highly capable use of social media," Rasmussen said. The group's messaging has included both horrifying videos of executions and more enticing images of Islamic State fighters and their families, he said.

S.R.H. Hashmi | 9 years ago | Reply West may not be at war with Islam but there is no denying the fact that during the last few decades, Muslims and Muslim states have been a very popular target for the West. And when a Western state moves against a Muslim state, nearly all Western states consider it their duty to join the move, even when they have nothing against that particular state themselves. And the West's map-change plan is no secret. Now, if they were not against Muslim states, why did they have to put this map-change plan into practice, which has brought nothing but ruin to the Muslim world. We know Saddam Hussain was ruthless with those who opposed his rule but he had given a fair degree of stability, peace and prosperity to his people but the invasion of Iraq by born-again Christians George Bush and Tony Blair has ruined the country. In Saddam's time, there was no al-Qaeda or any terrorist outfit in Iraq but now the country has become a hot-bed of terrorism, which is spreading far and wide in the region. Obviously, even an ordinary person could see that removing Saddam Hussain and his administration, without putting in a suitable alternative setup will upset the fine balance Saddam has kept and will start a free-for-all. There is no way that cunning and crafty persons like George Bush and Tony Blair could not foresee the consequences of their act. Among various reasons given for the invasion of Iraq, George Bush even claimed that God wanted him to invade Iraq. And seeing what foreign does to countries, the Western countries did the same to Syria and Libya, turning the fairly prosperous and stable states into ruins. Unfortunately, in this some Muslim states were also involved. In a way, the emergence of IS (Daesh) can be traced back to the West's meddling in the region. And we know how the West has been supporting Israel against Palestinians, who are mostly Muslims. It was the aiding and abetting by the West that has made Israel the monster that it has become now. So much so, that Israel does not hesitate even in throwing punches at its benefactors. While the attitude of European states is changing a bit, the US remains totally committed to Israel. It is strange that the Western world does not see much wrong with Jews from around the globe, who had no connection with Palestine ever, or whose ancestors moved away from Palestine centuries back, descending on it and forcibly evicting Palestinians from land they have inhabited for centuries. Under the pretext of holding peace negotiations, the US gave the Israelis an opportunity to grab more and more of Palestinian land by building settlements on illegally-occupied land and through the barrier wall, in the circumstances where it had plenty of spare land in Israel proper which could be used for this purpose. If these illegal-settlement building continues for another couple of years, it will finish all chances of a two-state solution, by not leaving a contiguous piece of land on which the Palestinians could establish their state. Apart from playing the role of a dis-honest broker, by pressuring various states, the US even prevents the United Nation Security Council from finding a solution to problem. And now the West seems to be pampering India which continues to hurl threats of cold-start, and of inflicting pain on Pakistan and often starts unprovoked firing at line of control and working boundary, killing innocent civilians in the process. And for no good reason, India recently blew up a Pakistan boat, killing the fishermen in it. Support of the West, especially of the US remains with India as compared to Pakistan, in the same way that it favours Israel in comparison to Palestinian Muslims. The facts stated above hardly prove the West to be a friend of Muslims, rather the opposite appears to be the case. P.S: I sincerely hope that India and Pakistan start living like decent neighbours. There really seems to be no good reason for the neighbours to be hitting at each other and thus wasting their scarce resources on wasteful pursuits. Friendly relations could definitely be to the benefit of both, and for the good of the region. If the Western countries which fought bitter world wars are friends again, there is not reason for us to continue old animosities and spoil our future as well. Karachi
