KARACHI: Contrary to television and online news reports, the black box of the Russian-manufactured cargo plane that crashed in the Naval Housing Scheme early Sunday morning has not been found yet.

Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Pervez George told The Express Tribune on Monday evening that investigators were still on the look out for the black box, which would give vital clues about why and how the fatal incident occurred.

Although it has been more than 36 hours since the aircraft went down, George says there is no reason to think the box will not be found. “The black box is somewhere under the debris in the naval colony and soon we’ll announce its discovery,” he said optimistically.

Pakistan Navy Commander spokesperson Salman Ali confirmed that investigators were still searching for the device. “In my opinion, since the aircraft took a steep dive into the ground, the box was buried deep under the rubble and that’s why there are some difficulties in excavating it,” Ali said.

Meanwhile, Edhi spokesperson Anwar Kazmi said all eight bodies of the crew have been found and were lying at the organisation’s morgue. “Six of these badly burnt bodies are somewhat recognisable, while two of them are just pieces of flesh,” he added.

Kazmi said the bodies would be released to the embassies concerned after the interior ministry gave permission to do so.

Investigative teams to arrive soon

George said investigation teams from Georgia, Ukraine and Russia are expected to arrive in Karachi in the coming days.

“Representatives from Georgia’s civil aviation authority and Sun Way airline are expected to arrive tomorrow,” he informed.

A delegation from the Ilyushin Production Complex in Moscow is also expected to join the probe. A team from Ukraine, which lost seven of its citizens, would also be coming, he added.
