KARACHI: Scores of people came out to protest the water shortage in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Clifton at the Teen Talwar roundabout on Sunday, with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders accusing the Sindh government of creating the problem.

"It is nothing but political victimisation," claimed PTI's Khurram Sher Zaman. "Our supporters are being punished for voting for our party."

He said that many of those present at the protest were not PTI supporters but since PTI had won in the constituency, the provincial government had stopped removing garbage from the area while also engineering a water shortage and letting gutters overflow.

"The worst-affected areas are DHA Phase I and II, near Shireen Jinnah Colony," he added. "There has not been a single drop of water in our taps for the past three days."

PTI leader Samar Ali Khan alleged that the government had created an artificial water shortage in the area. "What kind of punishment is being given to the residents of NA-250?" he questioned. "The water tanker mafia has already hiked their rates."

Meanwhile, PTI leader Dr Arif Alvi demanded that the government conduct local bodies elections, warning that the residents of Karachi may take to the streets against the Sindh government over its failure to address lingering civic issues.

PTI supporter Wahab Khan, who lives in Shireen Jinnah Colony, claimed that apart from the problem of the lack of water, piles of burning garbage were also affecting the health of his neighbourhood's residents.

"The protesters come not only from Shireen Jinnah Colony but also from Clifton Block 1 and 2, as they have also become political victims of the Sindh government," he said. "We demand that the government immediately address the water shortage, otherwise we will protest in front of Chief Minister House and Bilawal House."
