Twenty two students of Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) took part in an essay writing competition on the causes and impact of climate change here on Monday.

The competition is part of Indus Consortium’s nation-wide inter-university essay writing competition.

Eighteen students each from the University of Sindh, Jamshoro and Bahauddin Zakriya University Multan and 16 students of Sindh Agriculture University, Tando Jam have already submitted their essays in similar events during the past few weeks.

A similar event will be organised for the students of Sindh University, Jamshoro (Laar campus Badin) on Tuesday (today).

Speaking on the occasion, national coordinator of Indus Consortium’s climate change campaign, Ashok Lilani said the purpose of the competition was to raise awareness about climate change and its impact among university students and to find their views on those burning, yet neglected issues.

“We are inviting young people to share their hopes and concerns for the future, thereby generating an important youth perspective,” he added.

Dr Anwaar Ahmad, PMAS-AAUR director student affairs, said they would continue to focus their efforts toward such initiatives where they could make a direct impact on public lives.

A panel of distinguished judges from the education and development sectors will grade the submissions based on content, analysis and presentation.

The top three essays will be awarded cash prizes of Rs50,000, Rs25,000 and Rs10,000 respectively at a national conference on climate change to be held in the federal capital next month.
