QUETTA: An inquiry has been ordered against three police constables for allegedly gang-raping a gypsy woman in custody in the Notal area of Nasirabad district.

The incident took place about a week ago but the accused policemen were suspended after local political parties and tribal elders mounted a vociferous protest campaign.

According to sources, the three policemen picked up the woman, a mother of three, from a shanty town along the National Highway and shifted her to Notal police station. However, the woman alleged that she was raped by the police officials before she was driven to the police station.

The victim’s statement has not been recorded by the police yet.  While talking to The Express Tribune, DPO Nasir Abad Saleem Lehri said the three constables have been suspended and an inquiry initiated against them. “The police will take strict action against any official found guilty,” he added.

Lehri also said the police officials should not have taken the woman to the police station as it is a violation of law and against tribal norms.

According to the SHO of Notal police station, a case was registered against the three constables under Section 342 of the Pakistan Penal Code-PPC, Punishment for wrongful confinement.

The DPO added that the police would also investigate the matter to find out whether the case also involved gang rape.  “Justice will be done,” he affirmed.

Nothing will be done and it will continue as it is because all appointments are done without merit. They are therefore protected by their patrons.
