Voicing concern: MQM submits resolution against ‘blasphemous cartoons’

KARACHI:

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) submitted a resolution in the Sindh Assembly on Friday, condemning the caricatures published in the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

MQM leader Syed Sardar Ahmed submitted the resolution in the assembly, stating that the publication of the cartoons had hurt the sentiments of Muslims in Pakistan and around the world.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, he said that they had appealed to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, United Nations and the European Union to take notice of the incident and take disciplinary action against the cartoons.

"We strongly condemn the derogatory cartoons that have hurt the Muslim Ummah."

"These incidents are being repeated and can lead to a clash of civilisations and dispute among the Muslims and Christians." On the other hand, the party also condemned incidents of terrorism, he said.

Earlier, MQM chief Altaf Hussain also condemned the caricatures. Altaf said that publishing the cartoons has nothing to do with freedom of speech.
