KARACHI:

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee announced a peaceful day of mourning across the country on Sunday against the killings of its workers.

The party will not accept any police inquiry into the death of Faraz Alam as he was a victim of police torture, claimed MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi. The 24-year-old party worker died in police custody on Saturday morning. The police claim he suffered a cardiac arrest. "We request Maqbool Baqar, the chief justice of Sindh High Court, to take suo moto action on this killing," Rizvi demanded while speaking to the media at Jinnah hospital. He claimed Faraz was heavily tortured by the police.

The police claimed that Faraz confessed to killing four men but Rizvi insisted he was innocent. "Every other day, the police are arresting MQM workers and demanding bribes in return for their release," said Rizvi. "The police have become a 'bhatta' mafia."
