KARACHI:

All corruption cases unearthed in the review of the audits of provincial departments will be referred to the National Accountability Bureau (Nab), announced the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Saleem Raza Jalbani, on Wednesday.

“We will recover the billions of misappropriated funds of various departments, otherwise refer the cases to Nab,” he said, talking to the media after presiding over a meeting to review the public health engineering department accounts.

Earlier, the provincial watchdog heard the audit director-general, Ghulam Akbar Sohu, present the health engineering department audit for the year 2008-09. Sohu said some of the issues were 40 years old. “The officials had received Rs20 million as advance payment in 1970 for development work but has yet to repay the amount or show where the money was spent,” he said.  The department secretary, Shazia Rizvi, claimed she was ‘helpless’ to recover the money. “Despite several attempts, these officials are unable to provide the records,” she said. Jalbani asked her to take action against the officials involved in this scam. He also asked her to write to the chief minister and the chief secretary to complain about these officers.
