KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Sirajul Haq has demanded that Thar be made the capital of Sindh for at least three years.

He was speaking on a visit to the drought-affected region on Tuesday. Haq demanded that the district be made the capital of Sindh and that the next federal cabinet meeting be arranged in Thar.

"The chief minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, along with his cabinet members should be tried under Section 302 for the deaths of over 600 children in Thar in a year."

The official death toll issued by the health ministry stands somewhere at 350.

Inaugurating two wells in Mithi, Haq announced a winter package from the Al-Khidmat, the party's welfare organisation, which includes oxygen cylinders and a team of doctors that will reach Mithi by Wednesday.

Haq also led a rally from Badin to Mithi at around 3pm, while the party's supporters anxiously waited for their leader in Mithi. Addressing the 'Save Thar Rally', he said that children were dying in Thar while the Government of Sindh seemed to be sleeping.

Speaking on his visit to Civil Hospital, Mithi, Haq demanded the Sindh government to take effective measures for the rehabilitation of children who were suffering from hunger and malnourishment.

"Once the leaders have taken votes from the people, they forget their plight," said Haq, referring to the Sindh cabinet.
