The year saw the release of notable films such as the much awaited spy-thriller Operation 021 and the crime-caper comedy Na Maloom Afraad. Directors Jami and Afia Nathaniel tackled newer styles and genres of filmmaking through movies like Dukhtar and Operation 021. Films such as the political-drama The System and neo-noir Tamanna also attempted to break away from the conventional Pakistani theme.
With new films being released yearly, fresh talent in addition is being churned out, which brings out an energetic air to characters. This was evident in the performances of debutant actors such as Urwa Hocane, Mohsin Abbas Haider and Omair Rana.
The highest-voted category for the awards was for Best Film with 2,736 votes with the Best Supporting Actor (Male), Best Actor, Best Debut and Best Editing categories, however, saw tight finishes in particular.
The category for ‘best actor in a lead role — female has been axed due to a lack of powerful female lead characters in films that were released this year.
