FAISALABAD: Hundreds of residents of Kamalia and surrounding areas on Friday blocked Faisalabad-Chichawatni Road for several hours in a protest demonstration against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).

Traffic was suspended for several hours due to the protest. Asad Rafiq, one of the protesters, told newsmen that there was no gas supply at their homes in the morning and evening.

He said families had been greatly inconvenienced due to unavailability of gas.

“Children have no warm water to bathe, women have no gas to cook,” he said.

He said many people had gotten ill because they could not use heaters.

Shafiqur Rehman, another protester, said hundreds of complaints had been lodged with the SNGPL, demanding gas supply in the morning and evening but no action had been taken to address the demands. He said the people were frustrated by tough winter conditions.

The protesters chanted slogans against the government and the SNGPL.

They said if the SNGPL did not restore gas supply by Saturday (today), they would stage a sit-in at the SNGPL office till the issue was addressed.

A police contingent headed by Kamalia station house officer reached the scene and pacified the protesters by assuring them that their problem would be resolved soon.

The protesters then called off their protest and dispersed peacefully. An SNGPL spokesman told The Express Tribune gas supplies had run short after the government exempted industries from gas load shedding in winter.

He said the SNGPL had evolved a gas load shedding schedule for Faisalabad.

He said as soon as gas supply improved, the load shedding schedule would be revised.
