Bomb defused: Chamkani police thwart terror bid

PESHAWAR: Chamkani police foiled a terror bid by intercepting a rickshaw strapped with a 12 kilogramme (kg) remote-controlled bomb near the motorway Sunday night. The bomb disposal unit (BDU) was summoned to the spot, which neutralised the explosive successfully. While talking to The Express Tribune, a Chamkani police official said the rickshaw was intercepted near the motorway. “It was a powerful device likely to target the police,” he said, adding the driver had been arrested and shifted to an undisclosed location for further interrogation. BDU Peshawar head Irshad Khan told The Express Tribune the 12kg explosive contained about 2kgs of ball bearings. “It was a remote-controlled pipe bomb,” he said, adding the device was defused in the second attempt. Police cordoned the road off for at least 30 minutes and opened it once the bomb was defused. “The driver seems to be a member of a terrorist outfit,” said a police official. Further investigation is under way.
