As Nato troops withdraw, Afghanistan sees rise in attacks

Over 78 people have been killed in eight major attacks, mostly on foreigners in Kabul.

KABUL: As ISAF ended combat command in Afghanistan earlier this week, militant attacks in the war torn country have surged over the past month.

Most of the eight major attacks have targeted foreigners in Kabul and left at least 78 people dead.

November 2014

Nov 18: A suicide attack against a company run by a former British soldier kills two Afghan guards in Kabul.

Nov 19: A suicide bomber slams his car into the Green Village complex in Kabul, home to many foreigners.

Nov 23: At least 57 people are killed when a suicide bomber detonates his charge in the middle of a crowd watching a volleyball match in the southeastern province of Paktika, near the border with Pakistan.

The area is a stronghold of the Haqqani network, and the attack causes the highest death toll since 2011.

Nov 24: Two US soldiers are killed in Kabul by a roadside bomb as they drive by. The attack also causes Afghan civilian casualties, according to US defense officials.

Nov 27: A British diplomatic vehicle is hit by a car bomb in Kabul, killing six people including two embassy employees, one Afghan, one British.

Nov 29: The Taliban attack a residence for foreigners near the parliament in Kabul, killing four people. Three of them are a South African father working for an education organisation and his two children.

December 2014

Dec 11: Two suicide attacks rock Kabul, killing at least seven people and wounding around 30.

One attack claimed by the Taliban kills six Afghan soldiers riding in a military bus, while the other targets the French cultural centre where a play is taking place, killing one and wounding 15-20.
