English Premier League: Toons puncture Mourinho’s ‘bus’ at St James Park

Super-sub Cisse scored a brace to end the Blues’ 13-game unbeaten run

KARACHI: Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho came to St James’ Park with the hopes of recording his first ever league win at Newcastle, but instead suffered a shock 2-1 defeat as Papiss Cisse came off the bench in the 53rd minute to score a brace for Alan Pardew’s struggling side.

Newcastle were reduced to 10-men in the 81st minute after Steven Taylor was sent off following a second yellow card, but did enough to hold back Chelsea’s onslaught as Didier Drogba gave the Blues a lifeline by scoring – what became a consolation goal – in the 83rd minute.

Chelsea were comfortably the better side in the first half hour of the match, but the Toons soon regained their confidence and came close to breaking the deadlock as Ayoze Perez played in Jack Colback with a spectacular reverse pass, only for only for Thibaut Courtois to charge off his line and pull off a fine save.

However, the visitors finished the half in the ascendancy and Oscar was not far wide with an acrobatic overhead kick just before half-time.

Newcastle goalkeeper Elliot picked up an injury when making a clearance just before the interval and had to be replaced by Jak Alnwick, while Cisse was introduced for Remy Cabella to bolster the attack for the Magpies and the move paid high dividend as he scored in the 57th minute to give his side the lead.

Chelsea then dominated possession for a while, and saw a fine shot by striker Diego Costa blocked by man of the man Fabricio Coloccini, before the home side stunned the visitors with another goal.

Newscastle played it neatly as Colback made a dashing run through the midfield to pass the ball to Moussa Sissoko, who fumbled with the ball, but did enough to poke the ball towards Cisse who scored without any hassle in the 78th minute to cement the lead for the home side.

Chelsea were left shaken and nervous but were given a lifeline when Taylor picked his second yellow and Drogba scored just minutes later.

However, as the game crept towards its dying moments, the Toons held their breath as the Blues laid siege, with Alnwick having to make some fine saves to deny the visitors any reprieve.

The game ended 2-1 after the six minutes of injury time saw Chelsea make last ditch efforts to keep their unbeaten streak alive, but shot wide of the goal and the referee blew his whistle to award a much-needed victory for Pardew’s side.

Even though the referee Martin Atkinson added six minutes to the injury time, Mourinho was not impressed.

"There could have been 20 minutes' stoppage time, but the situation would have been the same because things were happening outside the four lines that the referee couldn't control,” said Mourinho.

"The referee can't punish the ball boy who disappeared with the ball, the referee couldn't punish the people in the crowd who kept the ball."

Meanwhile, West Ham takes on Swansea City at Upton Park, while Aston Villa hosts Leicester City at Villa Park in Sunday's matches.
