The minister who made the haramzada remark was initially surprised to know people felt she had said anything wrong. When the media climbed into her, she gave a mumbled statement of regret. This sort of nasty language is commonly used by the Hindutva parties to rally their base, as I shall show later. When the media picked up the issue, the opposition brought it to parliament. Arun Jaitley, one of the few BJP men who is uncomfortable with Hindutva, disowned the statement and condemned it. Jaitley is politically unimportant and cannot even win his own seat. The prime minister, who knows the mood of the Hindutva base, did not respond immediately. He knows that such signaling is important. He leaked a report through his preferred agency — ANI — that he had said at a closed-door meeting that people should watch what they say, which is as oblique as a condemnation can get.
The Hindu wrote in an editorial that “if the prime minister is indeed shocked at the Sadhvi’s choice of words, he should have said so explicitly instead of couching his reprimand in generalities. If he intended to get his no-nonsense message across to his ministers and MPs, the right course for him would have been to drop Niranjan Jyoti from the Ministry. Criticising the actions without criticising the actor does not go far enough. Actually, the apology seems to have been offered to deflect the attacks of the opposition parties who were demanding her resignation.”
The opposition had spotted Modi’s error and pressed its advantage. Modi then came to parliament and said such things should not be said by anyone and that took the sting off the issue as far as the media was concerned. The question is, why do those who speak in the name of Hindutva say such things and why are they not condemned properly?
During the election campaign, Giriraj Singh, an unknown BJP candidate, came into prominence by saying: “Woh log Narendra Modi ko rokna chahate hain, woh Pakistan dekh rahe hain. Aane wale dino mein aise logon ke liye jagah Hindustan mein nahi, Jharkhand mein nahi, parantu Pakistan mein hoga, Pakistan mein hoga (Those who want to stop Narendra Modi are looking to Pakistan for support. In the coming days, there won’t be place for such people in India, in Jharkhand because their place will be in Pakistan).”
Around the same time, a tape was leaked of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Pravin Togadia talking at a meeting in Gujarat. He was offering advice to a Hindu neighbourhood where a Dawoodi Bohra, one of the most peaceful and prosperous communities of India, had bought a property. Bohras are wealthy and prefer to live in the more affluent urban areas, which tend to be Hindu. The neighbourhood that had called Togadia for advice did not want the Bohra family. Togadia told them they ought to create an atmosphere of a riot and spit on the family to get them to move out of a property they had legally bought. This was recorded on video and there was no ambiguity in what was being planned.
As I said, both these things happened around the same time. The media was incensed and Modi responded by putting out this general tweet: “Petty statements by those claiming to be BJP’s well-wishers are deviating the campaign from the issues of development and good governance.”
Modi later made Giriraj a minister, showing us what he actually believed. The RSS similarly lied about Togadia, saying there might be some misunderstanding (I translated the thing in full for livemint.com and it is totally transparent) for those who did not speak Gujarati. Togadia remains VHP’s international president.
The reason is that, despite their mumbled half-condemnations, Modi and the RSS approve of such statements and inevitably reward the people who make them. And this of course is because a large part of India responds favourably to them, despite the media’s anguish.

Something is rotten in Modidom except it smells of roses to some.. In Gujarat the Hindi textbook says Buddha was a disciple of Gandhi; in same Gujarat hundreds of Muslim teachers that taught Urdu have been declared redundant & some are asked to teach some other minority language like Tamil or Marathi neither of which they know while history teachers among them are being ordered to teach science & maths in Gujarati; Sushma, Modi's foreign minister, jumps the gun to let out the secret that Hindu holy scripture Bhagvad Gita will be made National Scripture of India [& to the blazes with secularism(!)]; and per Times of India report RSS under name Dharm Jagaran (risen religion) spends 5 million rupees a month in UP to lure to Hinduism 1000 Muslim & Christian families average per month. Conversion to Hinduism (euphemistically called "ghar vaapsi"-home coming) is going on with merry speed at Benares, Modi's constituency & nobody is worried about the coercion or corruption involved.
All this must be perfectly legal & all, but it sure will lead to final polarization that RSS & Modi seek. To Modi's credit he has put an end to the biggest hoax Congress had perpetrated so far, and that is: without changing a single word in Constitution he has ended the pretense of Secularism. He is honest that way. Quite efficient even if maleficent. .
@ask: Thanks for clearing that up.
@ny: A very balanced, yet interesting comment. Thanks.
This is why we had to have a state of our own. Our forefathers had this vision that we cannot live freely under the rule of Hindus.
As for the incident where the Hindus are reported to not want the Bohra family in their midst, could it be because the Hindus didn't want any animal sacrifice in their neighborhood? Or, was this neighborhood an all vegetarian one? These may be valid reasons, but if not, that will be religious discrimination, which is wrong.
@Parvez: Not to detract from merits of your post, Rajan as head of RBI was appointed during Singh's premiership.
Hindustan inspite of a living example in its neighbor has nothing learned from the mistakes we Pakistanis made in the last 3 to 4 decades.
Dipak@Rangoonwala: Always wrong, Aakar needs to move to Pakistan and you to Rangoon. Modi, the man of the year will stay in India. Rest of you keep bickering about Modi including the Shariffs, Nawaz and Raheel.
As an interested observer I note that you seem quite obsessed with this topic and possibly rightly so......but at the same time in order to get a more balanced picture, do write about the economic steps being taken like the appointment of Raghuram Rajan as the head of the reserve Bank and positive steps taken to grow the economy in order to create wealth so that many more millions get out of poverty. Then with your insight draw a connection between the two and show which side is winning.
@Ali:
yeah just like your akbaruddin crowaisi.
The whole risecof BJP to power is based on the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992, and subsequent campaign of hate against minorities. So this shouldn't be surprising.
I'm not convinced Modi is leading this, however. It looks to me that, like Vajpayee before him, he is trying to moderate the hate mongers. However, he cannot afford to alienate them since his power depends on them.
Modi is not doing any service to India by promoting intolerance and hate. He might end up achieving some material development during his term but he would also be denting the Indians psychologically in a big manner. Modi is blighted by his prejudice for non Hindus and this is not good for India.
"because these millions have nowhere to go..."
how about if you start thinking they have no need to go anywhere. they belong as much as you do. that would help a lot.
Oh no Mr Patel, looks like you questioned Modi and his allies. Be prepared to be crucified by his supporters for no reason whatsoever Now that I've given you the advanced warning :) , I'd have to say that the article was a really informative one. It really questions India's pompous claims of being secular. Pakistan is "an Islamic Republic", yet you dont see a smear campaign about Hindus/India in any of the every time the elections are around.( the exception is Bilawal Bhutto who is the "Veena Malik" of Pak politics). However, I cant say the same about India. Both countries have a problem with treating their minorities fairly and both countries should passionately work on improving this (firing ministers that promote hate against minorities, and certainly not promoting them, is a good first step)
@Rangoonwala: " ... Because these millions have nowhere to go. ... "
The deal was that you would take them in.
Unfortunately Hindutava parties have decide to employ the same strategies as Islamists,though in a diluted form. But they tend to forget that India is a democracy and a secular country,and Pakistan a theocracy.This difference is the only one that goes for India,but they are bent on squandering.If they think Hindu philosophy is to deny their neighbours rights for what happend in other countries,then it is hardly much different from Islamist one,they pretend to counter.
"HINDUTVA" has become such an abusive word now a days. If Sikh can become Prime Minister of India for 10 yrs why can't a Hindu become Prime Minister of India ?
Sirs, can I draw your regular reader and frequent commentator Rangoonwala's attention to your editorial of 7th December titled "Our Vanishing Parsis". The honorable gentleman's much harried mind and apprehensions about India's minorities would be laid at rest by a close and diligent reading of the editorial. It might even give relief to the ulcer he is nursing and keeping him awake at night.
@Rangoonwala:
I think ET allows your comment out of "liberal guilt" or perhaps you are related to the moderators.
Otherwise I can't see why such brain-dead retarded comments are allowed.
Let me counter your comment, not for your sake, but for the sake of intelligent Pakistanis.
"The author has done a brilliant expose of Modi and his BJP."
All these news appeared in all Indian dailies. They appeared in all Indian news channels. They appeared in social media. They were debated to death by everyone involved. No one not even BJP condoned these actions.
So, how did this opinion piece exposed something that was already exposed a million times? Maybe some of you were hiding under a rock.
"A true nature of things. And a harbinger of tragedies and hard times to unfold in the bleak Hindustani future. Truly the author can be considered a Voice in the Bharati Wilderness."
Hahahha. The world thinks the future of India is bright.
"Just as the prophets of old were disregarded. So be it. Because everyone, deep in their hearts know what Modi is. What Modi represents. And a ‘Shining’ ‘Vibrant’ ‘Rising’ Bharat would not be worth anything at the cost of alienating, disenfranchising all their millions of minorities. "
The only minority that is alienated are Muslims. Why? Because they want to remain alienated.
"Because these millions have nowhere to go. If India is for Hindus only, rest assured Hindustan’s future is guaranteed null void and bleak."
True. Because of these millions of Mulsims, Hindustan's future is dented. But time will change that. Even the Muslims will come forward.
If Modi wants to prove to the people that voted him to power that he is honest, then he must have zero tolerance towards such people.
I'm not concerned about the secularism of India. It's not 70 years old, it's several thousands of years old.
But I'm concerned about the progress of the country with such people at the helm.
The secular Islamist brigade made India a mini Pakistan and the Hindutva brigade wants to restore India to Hindus.
Modi of course is a out and out Hindutva. Absolutely no doubt. Development is just a mukota. Look at what is happening. All sorts of dumbwits become ministers. We have the Govt. history head saying Indians flew 3000 years ago. The ex CM of Uttarakhand says we had atom bombs 3000 years ago and of course our sweet beloved PM saying we transplanted heads 3000 years ago. Pakistan had only one chap saying that he can run a car on water. We have a whole government saying so.
.A party of mediocre is there for world to make fun of India.You asked for it.He is Imran Khan (if not hafiz Saeed) of India.
It will be tragic for inhabitants of Sub-Continent if religious extremists / hate mongers may dominate politics in India & Pakistan. Their mindset shows that still we are living in fifth century A.D
what a big failure your are ..!!
