ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court directed the federal government on Thursday to submit a comprehensive report explaining how much money collected from oil and gas exploration and mining companies is transferred to provinces for welfare projects.

The mega-corporation exploiting the natural resources of an area give substantial amount of funds that are supposed to be spent on social welfare and development of the local community. In reality, these funds amounting to more than Rs600 billion have disappeared in provincial governments’ records.

The two-member bench headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali has also ordered chief secretaries and the provincial social welfare ministries to prepare a report giving details of the development projects on which the sums collected from exploration companies were spent.

The bench has summoned advocate general in the next hearing.
