KARACHI:

Hundreds of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) workers staged a demonstration on Thursday to protest the ‘extra-judicial’ killings of their party worker.

ASWJ worker Tariq Mauvia, son of Abdul Rasheed, was found dead from Sakran, Balochistan, on December 1. His body was later shifted to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth, Karachi.

Soon after the family identified him at the Edhi morgue, they and the party workers decided to stage a protest. They took the body to outside the Karachi Press Club on Thursday at around 11am and then moved their protest to the Sindh High Court. There was a severe traffic jam in the area during that time.

“The Rangers arrested him [Mauvia] from his house on October 29 and made him disappear,” claimed the party spokesperson, adding the law enforcers failed to give a straight answer when the ASWJ approached them. “After killing him, his body was shifted to a morgue and he was labelled a worker of a Sindhi nationalist party.”

ASWJ leader Allama Rab Nawaz Hanfi claimed that more than 26 of their party workers are missing. “Our peaceful protest will turn into shutter-down strikes and then the government will be responsible for the law and order situation of the city,” warned Hanfi.

However, the protesters dispersed five hours into the protest as a high court judge gave orders to file an FIR against those responsible for Tariq’s killing. The party spokesperson said the case will be registered after discussion with the party leaders and the victim’s family.
