Investigation: JIT formed to probe Model Town violence

Team will be headed by Quetta CCPO Abdul Razzaq Cheema.

LAHORE: A five-member joint investigation team has been constituted to probe the death of 14 Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers in Model Town violence on June 17.

An FIR for the incident was registered on a complaint filed by Minhajul Quran International Secretariat Director Muhammad Jawad Hamid on August 28.

He nominated 22 suspects including the prime minister, the Punjab chief minister, the interior minister and the then provincial law minister.

A notification (available with The Express Tribune) issued by Home Secretary Major (retd) Azam Suleman on Thursday says that the joint investigation team has been constituted under Section 19 (I) of the Anti Terrorism Act, 1997, to probe and investigate the case.

The team will be headed by Quetta CCPO Abdul Razzaq Cheema and will include representatives of the Inter-Services Intelligence and the Intelligence Bureau; and an SP and a DSP nominated by the Punjab Police IG.

The notification says that the Punjab IG will depute a member of the team to be the investigation officer for the police and will submit the inquiry report.
