BALOCHISTAN: As polio cases continue to pile up in the country , an 18-month-old girl has also fallen prey to the deadly disease, Express News reported on Thursday.

The newest case take the total number of cases reported to 244 across the country. The case was reported in the Killa Abdullah district of Balochistan.

The health authorities also made polio vaccination compulsory for all the citizens travelling internationally. Earlier yesterday, the health department confirmed two cases from Khyber Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, while one each was confirmed from Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Among the infected children was a eight-month-old Yasir, a resident of Lath Basti in Bin Qasim Town, Karachi. The child had only received four doses of the oral polio vaccine.

Speaking about Sindh’s polio campaign, Minister of State for National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination Saira Afzal said that only 29% of the campaign was completed in some districts of the province, while in others only 4% was completed.

In USA they use IPV vaccine for Polio and in Pakistan we use OPV vaccine for Polio,

OPV vaccine is also a source of Polio in vaccine receiver this is the reason USA stoped using OPV vaccine. reference : cdc . gov (section Polio Disease – Questions and Answers.)

If the risk of contacting polio due to drops is very, very low. for say it is less than 10 in a million, then few hundered cases for 20M population is understandable.
