KARACHI: The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) police claim to have arrested a gang of robbers allegedly involved in bank robberies in the metropolis.

The arrests were disclosed at a press conference by SIU chief SP Farooq Awan at his office on Wednesday noon. The arrested suspects were identified as Muhammad Sajid, Abdul Khaliq and Adnan. They were arrested during a raid conducted by the SIU police in Awami Colony, Korangi.

Awan said that the most recent robbery bid of the suspects was at a branch of Summit Bank in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. However, they managed to escape as the guards resisted their attempt. One of the guards was injured.

Awan said that the suspects were arrested with the help of footages recorded at the close circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the bank. He said that Sajid is the ringleader of the gang, adding that he was also involved in the killings of two policemen in Ferozabad in 2008.

The officer said that all three criminals were wanted in various cases of crime. They were arrested by the SIU police last year but resumed their criminal activities after being released on bail.

Talking about the bank robberies in the city, Awan said that 17 bank robberies have been probed into and the culprits involved been arrested. Only two cases of bank robberies are still pending and the investigations are under way, he added.
