Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Wednesday that economic development was inextricably linked to effective communication.
He was addressing a meeting in Islamabad regarding the reconstruction and upgrade of railways stations across the Punjab. The chief minister said the reconstruction of stations in the province would result in the provision of quality facilities to the people. Sharif said the revamped facilities would also promote trade.
The chief minister said the Railways Department should consider proposals regarding the establishment of sports grounds on its lands in metropolitan areas. He said the government was committed to public service and had prioritised economic development. Sharif said the government had been using all resources at its disposal in this regard.
A decision to constitute a committee headed by the chief secretary was also taken in the meeting. The committee had been tasked to conduct feasibility studies regarding the construction of sports grounds and to consider proposal regarding the promotion of commercial activities near stations. The committee will submit a report in this regard in a month.
Railways Minister Khwaja Saad Rafique briefed those present on the occasion. He sought the Punjab government’s cooperation regarding the promotion of commercial activities near stations. He said this could generate revenue for the government.
National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) chief architect briefed those present regarding the reconstruction of railway stations in Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Okara, Narowal, Nankana Sahib, Gujranwala and Hassanabdal.
Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal and several other government officials were also present on the occasion.
