LAHORE: Speakers at a six-day workshop organised by the Citizen’s Commission for Human Development (CCHD) on Sunday stressed on Sunday the need for the government and other stakeholders to educate the youth to live in peace and harmony.

The workshop has been titled Capacity Building and Interfaith Harmony. The workshop’s organisers said the Punjab Youth Policy 2012 had defined youth as period where young people prepare themselves to become active and responsible citizens.  The participants said lack of education and skill development opportunities in south Punjab was rooted in history. They said this was due to poor education standards and lack of career counselling.  The speakers said this had prevented youth from constructively channelling their energy.

CCHD Team Leader Eid Muhammad Shams said the initiative had been taken to encourage youth from south Punjab to become agents of change and leaders of tomorrow. She said the need to take steps to change society for the better had been stressed in the workshop. Shams said they had also been taught conflict resolution and problem solving skills to enable them to promote peace and harmony.

Social Welfare Services chairperson Kiran Dar said such workshops had had a positive impact on the youth in particular and society in general. She was addressing those present at the prize distribution ceremony.  Dar said promoting peace and tolerance was the need of the hour. She stressed the need to harness the youth’s potential in this regard.

The CCHD is a non-governmental organisation that strives to change social attitudes to facilitate sustainable development, socio-ecological justice and equity. The organisation collaborates with all stakeholders including local communities, lawmakers, the government and district officials to achieve its objectives.

The CCHD also uses applied research, community mobilisation, public advocacy and capacity building initiatives in this regard.
