KHANEWAL:

More than 50 students of Nizampur Government Middle School and their parents on Friday protested against the Education Department for not taking action against a teacher who they said beats them.

Parents and students gathered outside the school and chanted slogans against the government.

Muhammad Umair, one of the parents, told newsmen that 22 students had moved an application against their mathematics teacher Muhammad Barkat last week, seeking action against him for frequently corporal punishment in classrooms.

He said the Education Department did not respond to the complaint and no inquiry was launched to investigate the allegations.

He said when the students submitted the complaint, Barkat approached families of four students – Mazhar, Waseem, Rizwan and Wajid - and threatened them with dire consequences.

He said the parents would continue to protest until Barkat was suspended from service and an inquiry was conducted.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Barkat dismissed the allegations. “I never approached anyone’s parents or threatened them,” he said.

He said he often scolded students for their poor performance but had never beaten them.

He said many students who were protesting had been told off for wasting their time by cutting classes and playing outdoors.
