Police reforms: ‘Only 26% murder accused are convicted’

Only 26 per cent of the murder accused are convicted by courts, Headquarters DIG Farooq Mazhar said on Thursday.


He was giving a briefing to Home Minister Shuja Khanzada at the Central Police Office.

Mazhar said efforts were bring made to improve police’s structure, operational strategy and operations of model police stations. He also briefed the minister about the installation of security cameras in the city and computerisation of police record.

The DIG said $7.6 was spent annually on the security of a person in the country. India spends $15.9 and Turkey $135 for the purpose, he said.

Finance AIG Hussain Habib Imtiaz told the minister the strength of Punjab Police was 177,000.

He said 82 per cent of the budget was spent on salaries and allowances and the remaining 18 per cent on fuel, utility bills, uniforms and operational activities.

Habib said 100 civilians to be recruited at police stations would be paid from the police’s budget. He said the appointments would be made through the National Testing Service (NTS) and advertisements had been made for the purpose.

He said the civilian staff would help computerise police record.

Inspector General (IGP) Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera said service history, discipline, reward and training data of 10,000 police officials had been computerised. He said a batch of 20 police officers would leave for Turkey shortly to receive training for Dolphin Police unit.
