KARACHI:

A 38-year-old woman is fighting for her life at the Civil Hospital, Karachi, after her husband set her on fire inside their house in Landhi on Sunday.

The incident took place at around 7:30am inside their house, located at Burmi Colony within the limits of Landhi police station. The woman has been identified as Memoona. Her family claims her husband, identified as Dal Ahmed, set her on fire.

"Ahmed was a scrap dealer at the Sher Shah scrap market but he hardly ever went to work," said the woman's brother, Muhammad Salim. "He used to beat her and demand her jewellery."

Salim, who is also a complainant in the case, said that Ahmed was demanding jewellery from Memona and upon refusal, he poured petrol over her and set her on fire. Ahmed also locked the door from the outside before fleeing. The family claims that Ahmed escaped with the jewellery and cash.

Hearing her hue and cry, the neighbours rescued the woman and shifted her to the Burns Ward of the Civil Hospital, Karachi, where doctors termed her condition critical as she had sustained 100 per cent burn injuries.

Reacting on information, police also rushed to the site. SHO Huzoor Buksh Solangi said that the couple was Bengali and this was Ahmed's second marriage. He had six children from his first wife. The officer said that an FIR has been registered against the accused.
