Warming up: Aziz to visit Kabul to invite Afghan president

ISLAMABAD:

The prime minister’s Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz will be visiting Kabul on Sunday to deliver a formal invitation to new Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to visit Pakistan, the foreign ministry said on Friday.

Aziz, who would be visiting Kabul as a special envoy of the prime minister, would hold discussions with regard to the timing and preparations of the visit of the Afghan president, it added in a statement.

Aziz would also meet with the Afghan National Security Adviser and exchange views on bilateral and regional issues. According to the foreign ministry, the visit was part of Pakistan’s substantive engagement with the new Afghan leadership.

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been tense over the past few months due to growing mistrust between the two neighbours on the issue of dealing with militant threat. With the formation of the new unity government in Kabul, Pakistan is hoping that relations between the two countries would normalise.

Meanwhile, at a weekly news briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam welcomed the recent development regarding CASA-1000 project, hoping the agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan would help further promote regional connectivity.

Talking about the ongoing tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary, the spokesperson urged India to sit on the negotiating table to discuss all bilateral disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir.
