Chinese keen to explore business opportunities

Delegation expresses interest in hydro energy, construction sectors.

ISLAMABAD: Chinese investors have expressed an interest in investing in the hydro energy and construction sectors of Pakistan. A 16-member business delegation visited the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI).

The delegation was led by Yunnan Department of Commerce Deputy Director General Yang Hui.

“The purpose of our visit is to directly interact with Pakistani counterparts to promote business relations,” Hui said. “Big companies of the Yunnan province want to contribute in the development of Pakistan by setting up joint ventures here,” he said, adding that they were also interested in upgrading the Silk Route in cooperation with Pakistan to improve the communication network between the two countries.

He stressed that the chambers of commerce in both countries should develop a close working relationship so that business-related information could be exchanged and linkages established.

He termed Pakistan an important destination for Chinese investors and also invited Pakistani counterparts to visit Yunnan to explore business opportunities.

Welcoming the Chinese delegation, ICCI President Muzzamil Hussain Sabri said that Pakistan needed huge investments, especially in hydro, coal and wind energy, construction of motorways, highways and road networks.

“Lack of feasibility reports is a major constraint in promoting joint ventures and investment between the two countries,” he said, stressing that the governments of both countries should form a joint committee to prepare feasibilities that would make investment easier.
