Muharram security: Peshawar among four districts declared ‘highly sensitive’

PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Home and Tribal Affairs department has divided the province into 26 different zones to maintain law and order during the month of Muharram, read a statement issued by the department on Thursday.

It said Peshawar, Kohat, Hangu and DI Khan have been declared ‘highly sensitive’ districts. Districts declared sensitive are Haripur, Mansehra, Bannu and Tank, while Nowshera, Mardan, Lakki Marwat, Abbottabad and Chitral districts were declared ‘normal’.

The notification quoted K-P Home Secretary Syed Akhar Ali Shah saying heavy police contingents accompanied by commandos will provide security to 193 imambargahs across the province, adding that armed forces could be called in to deal with any emergency.

Sensitive areas will be monitored by helicopters and Section 144 will remain imposed from the 1st till the 10th of the month. Pillion riding will also be banned and vehicles with tinted windows will be impounded, stated the notification.

The home department has banned entry of Afghan refugees to cities, imambargahs and along procession routes. Also banned is the unnecessary use of loudspeakers, whereas divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, regional police officers and district police officers are ordered to launch a crackdown against anti-social elements in their respective areas.

Moreover, a special monitoring cell has been established at the home department’s Provincial Crisis Management and Evaluation Centre to monitor the security situation.
