Mohammad Dawood from Dawood Banarsi Silk House in Karachi’s Gulfway Shopping Mall said, “There are suicide bombings taking place. People are not thronging markets for an obvious reason — security.”
In the same shopping centre, Junaid Khan sits at the Sara Silk Emporium which sells Indian suits and saris. He told The Express Tribune, “During Eidul Azha people usually don’t do much shopping. It is all about buying animals for sacrifice and people tend to visit the cattle market. One won’t find any customers around.”
At Karachi’s Aashiana Shopping Mall, Noor Ahmed, whose store sells pure and crepe silk confirmed Khan’s statement. “Most women are not interested in coming to the market to buy fabric, when just a few days are left to Eid. People are busy at the cattle market and are spending their money there.”
Ansar Khan of Lodhi Cosmetics said, “Electricity is no longer the key issue as far as this market is concerned, the electricity is powered off for an hour in the morning and then at night. Things become uncertain when there are bomb blasts. So the market shuts down completely.”
