LAHORE:
An exhibition of new works by artists Sarah Khalid and Hammad Aslam is opening at Gallery 39K on Friday (today).
Sarah Khalid said, “I enjoy rearranging and dislocating things in order to portray new meanings in daily life objects or spaces. This is a way for me to explore emotions. For example, I can be expressive yet restrained. So through my experimentation with material, I try to expand on that,” she said.
“My medium of choice is oil paint. My paint palette remains monochromatic. Working with mainly blacks and blues allows me to emphasise the object of my enquiry,” she said.
Artist Hammad Aslam said, “Within my work, I explore various mediums. I try to do this by constantly challenging myself. In some of my prints, I have tried to emphasise the natural grain of the wood. Elsewhere, I have incorporated the material used for mass produced advertising as my surface.”
“What I am attempting to do is, enhance my surroundings, altering what I see everyday. Whether it is the use of fashion accessories or models, my aim has always been to explore, rather than focusing on a particular theme,” he said.
Abdullah Qureshi, the owner of Gallery 39K, told The Express Tribune, “Both artists have fearlessly explored the abstract, yet maintained their individual approaches,” he said.
“Sarah Khalid creates blue spaces that might initially come across as surreal. However, I have found their reading incredibly abstract. To me, these works are psychological experiences that project eeriness as well as a mystery that makes one uneasy. Her use of plastic canvases as part of the work adds another dimension to the paintings,” he said. Qureshi said that Aslam had incorporated the use of bold abstract imagery. “He weaves fashion imagery and advertisements into his organic forms to create these prints,” he said.
“Sarah’s works can be described as psychological. Here, the application of colour and use of various media is exciting,” said Qureshi.
The exhibition will continue till October 16.
